| The Golden’s Bridge Fire Department is kicking it up a notch for their 10th annual “Community Day at the Firehouse, Saturday, Oct. 17, 10am to 3pm. The event has earned the endearing distinction as one of Lewisboro’s must-attend happenings of the fall season. Everything is free and there is no admission fee, plus every family receives a free raffle ticket and all children receive a gift bag when they arrive at the welcome tent.
Those who attend this year’s Community Day event had better bring their appetite, as the Golden’s Bridge Firehouse culinary team – led by a firefighter who is a chef by profession – will serve up an autumn-centric menu of mouth-watering selections, including their famous firehouse chili with all the fixings, bratwurst with onions, butternut squash soup, chicken tenders, and hot dogs. The morning will start with apple cider, juice, coffee, donuts, bagels, fruit and more – and for those who want to snack in between, there will be plenty of cookies, cupcakes, chips, Halloween candy, and an old-fashioned popcorn machine churning out mounds of fluffy, buttery puffs.
There will be non-stop activities for children at every corner of the Golden’s Bridge Fire Department grounds, including testing their skills in a giant inflatable obstacle course; operating a real fire hose and dousing “flames” at the windows of a house façade; picking their own pumpkin from the GBFD pumpkin patch; creating “jewelry” and “artwork with a fire safety message” at the crafts table; dressing in fire gear and getting behind the wheel of a fire truck for a photo op; meeting beloved GBFD costumed mascot Golden the Fire Dog (cameras ready!), and other family-friendly activities and festive fall fun.
Not to be left out, adults can participate in a fire-extinguisher operational tutorial and then put out real flames, and families can experience what it's like to map out an escape route when they enter the smoke house trailer. The day will also feature fire truck rides for children and adults of all ages!
Prizes for the free raffle include private family fire truck rides, siren & lights curbside birthday experiences, gift cards and more!
The day will be filled with action-packed demonstrations by Golden’s Bridge firefighters – including a dramatic vehicle extrication rescue using hydraulic tools, extinguishing a raging car fire during a live burn, and putting out kitchen grease fires. State and County Police and Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps members will provide other demonstrations involving high tech and K9 Units, and ambulance tours.
The event is as educational as it is fun and entertaining, according to Golden’s Bridge Fire Chief Albert Melillo.
“We host Community Day as a way of thanking and giving back to the residents who support us throughout the year. It brings together Golden’s Bridge firefighters and our partners in emergency response with the community we serve. But most importantly, to coincide with National Fire Prevention Month, Community Day calls attention to fire safety and prevention in an engaging, casual and entertaining environment. We want everyone to have a good time and to enjoy the camaraderie, food, activities and demonstrations. But we also want to impart the message that fire safety, education and awareness helps save lives,” GBFD Fire Chief Melillo said.
